Is songwriting a skill or a talent?

What I've learnt from writing hundreds of songs and why I think songwriting is probably a bit of both.

I think it's both to be honest.

Obviously there has to be something there in the first place that makes you want to write songs but you definitely get better at it the more you do it.

I've written hundreds of songs now and I write all the time. I'm definitely a better songwriter than I was when I started.

You just start picking things up.

I can tell a lot quicker now when a line isn't right or when I'm trying to force something because I want it to work. I think I've also got better at knowing when something actually is good and I need to stop messing with it.

That's probably a skill in itself because I can mess with things forever.

There are still songs that come really quickly though. Sometimes I'll spend ages trying to get something right and then another song will basically just fall out.

So I don't think there's some point where you've learnt how to write songs and that's it.

I'm still learning now.

I probably always will be.
