Why I write songs about real life
Why most of my songs come from things that have actually happened to me.
Pretty much everything I write comes from something real.
That's just how I've always written.
It doesn't mean every single lyric happened exactly as I'm singing it. Obviously you're still writing a song. I'll change things around, put different moments together or write something differently because it works better in the song.
But the actual feeling behind it is real.
I think that's the important bit for me.
I've never really been interested in sitting down and inventing a situation just because I think it would make a good song. If I'm singing something I want to know why I'm singing it.
Sometimes that's probably a bit uncomfortable because there are songs where I know exactly who they're about and exactly what was happening when I wrote them.
Other people listening don't need to know all of that.
I know.
That's enough.
I think that's probably why I've kept so many of the original lyrics and things from when I was making the songs as well. They're part of that time in my life.
The song comes out and everyone hears the finished version.
I've still got the messy version somewhere.
